Hello!
We are THRILLED to be starting school on Monday! Thank you for your tremendous support and attendance at our Back to School Conferences on Thursday, and we hope your family is ready to get our school year started!
This year, I will include a new message each week and any new information at the top of our message. Information that has been included for multiple weeks, such as conferences or school break information, will be after that. Our specialists will also periodically update their specific spaces so keep checking for updates. This should help parents find new information more quickly. Please provide feedback if there are other things you’d like to see in this space.
- We will introduce The Washington Way to students this coming week. As I have discussed with staff, these are not just words on the wall, they are the way we live our days. Joy, pride, and progress are words that we will see consistently throughout our building and throughout our year; more than that, however, these are concepts and ideas that you should feel when you walk through our doors. We are excited to embark on this journey together with you this year! (More information found here.)
- Our staff modeled joy by learning a new card game together. It was a great way to get to know each other and have fun! I can’t wait to see and hear how your children experience joy at school!
- Postcards were handed out at Back to School Conferences with a QR code and website for parent resources. If you missed it, I have more! Or, you can find the same link here.
- At the beginning of each school year, pickup and dropoff can be challenging. Please use the tips below to make our transitions safe and efficient:
- Students may not be dropped off before 7:45. Doors will open at that time, but we do not have adult supervision outside before that. When dropping off, please pull up as far as you can in the pickup line and a staff member will help your child from the car. Please do not leave your car in the pickup line. If you’d like to walk your child to school, please use a parking spot.
- All students will remain inside at pickup until called by an adult. An adult will be outside “calling cars” to a teacher inside, who will then line up students in order of cars. You will be told a number of where to park; use the parking spot numbers as a guide. Once all students are ready, they will come out to be helped into the vehicle. Again, please do not leave your car in the pickup line. If you need to get out to buckle your child (for example), please use a parking spot. Also note that due to liability concerns, we are not able to buckle your child in the car.
- During the first two weeks of school (ending 9/5), parents may walk their students to class. After 9/5, we ask that all adults remain outside to drop off their child(ren). This ensures fewer adults in our building and allows us to keep everyone safer. If you are visiting a classroom or attending lunch (after arrival time in the morning), please sign in at the office each time.
- If you are interested in volunteering in a classroom, please discuss this with the classroom teacher. If approved, all volunteers are required to complete a background check at Central Services. Please see the office for more information.
- Charles City Schools is very low on substitute teachers. We’d love for you to consider being a substitute teacher with us! Check out this flyer on how to make that happen!
- Attendance: If a child will be absent, please call to leave a message in the office at 641-257-6571. If your child’s dismissal plans change, please always call the office. Notifying the teacher is unnecessary; once you call the office, we will communicate the change to the teacher.
Have a great week!

New Communication Tool - Bright Arrow
Charles City Schools will be using a new communication tool named Bright Arrow for the 25-26 school year. This will replace School Messenger.
The first time you receive a text message from us, arriving from 79041, you will also receive, as a separate text, an invite to continue receiving texts. It is important that you reply YES to that text message. If you do not reply to it, you will not receive further text messages.
